ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — A shots-fired call led St. Louis officers to Marcus and Kossuth in the Penrose neighborhood at about 4:45 Thursday morning. Police Chief John Hayden says, when officers encountered the suspect, he didn't comply and fired shots at officers, hitting the hood of their car.

"The passenger officers returns fire, striking the suspect. The suspect then runs around (the block) where he collapses. He was taken to an area hospital, where he is in critical but stable condition."

Hayden says three guns were recovered, along with about 40 shell casings outside the home the suspect was firing his gun at.

No officers or residents were hurt.

Hayden says this has been a challenging year for officers, and this case is no exception.

"Seems to be more and more brazen activity that the officers are faced with," Hayden told the media this morning. "So it's a very difficult time to be a police officer. But at the end of the day, these officers are trained and seemed to handle things accordingly."
