SPRINGFIELD (KMOX) - Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, issued an executive order Monday stating that the rainbow flag will be flown over the Illinois State Capitol building in Springfield, in recognition of Pride month.
The governor said on Facebook that everyone in Illinois should be proud of who they are, who they love or how they identify. The rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ social movement and is widely displayed during Pride month.
According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, this is the first time ever Illinois has flown the rainbow flag over its Capitol.
Our State Capitol is flying a Pride Flag by order of @GovPritzker. This flag is very special, since it came from The Phoenix Center--the LGBTQ Community Center for Central Illinois--️------ #twill #Pride2019 pic.twitter.com/8OzfMQEThq
