ST. LOUIS--(KMOX)--For fear of revenge killings, Police Chief John Hayden orders more patrols in a northside neighborhood where a shooting Monday night left four dead and one injured.

"That's the reason we have increased our presence," Hayden said, "We're absolutely concerned about retaliation any time you have that many people deceased."

The bloody scene inside the home on Shreve Avenue has taken several days for detectives to sort out.  And many things, they still don't know--among them--what touched of the killings.

"We're still trying to determine what the exact confrontation was about," Hayden said.

Asked if it could be related to drug dealing, Hayden says that's a possibility because of the drugs and guns found in the home.

The chief says investigators believe everyone involved knew each other, and there was more than one gun fired in the home.

But whether the victims shot each other-- or were shot by someone else who came and went--is not clear.

Police are looking to question some people the chief says were there when the bullets were flying, but left before police arrived. It's not clear whether the ones who left were the shooters or just the lucky survivors.

"The question is the level of their responsibility. I think we know that there were some people there that we have not yet had an opportunity to interview."
