SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) - A pair of Illinois Senators are calling on the Commissioner of Major League Baseball to inform fans on which seats in MLB ballparks are the most dangerous to sit in.

A letter was sent Tuesday from Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Democrats from Illinois, asking that MLB uses all the technology and information it's gathering on ball speed, launch angle and landing spots, and use it  to compile information on dangerous foul balls.

"Disclosing that information would help inform fans and their families about the safest locations to sit," their letter said. "We appreciate the effort individual teams have taken so far for the safety of fans. Transparency benefits everyone in making informed decisions and preserves the integrity of the game."

Fan safety should be a top priority for @MLB. That’s why @SenDuckworth and I are asking the league to start collecting and reporting data about fan injuries at MLB stadiums. This is about protecting baseball’s biggest (and littlest) fans. https://t.co/3j465GKzif

The letter cited a 2014 Bloomberg News report, estimating nearly 1,800 fans per season were injured by a foul ball.

"We need more information to have a fuller picture," the senators stated in the letter. "We currently rely on media coverage about foul ball injuries, which can lead to misinformation and confusion."

Some teams, like the Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals, Toronto Blues Jays and others have already begun or plan protect fans by extending protective nets all the way to both outfield foul pole.

If those seats down the foul line are indeed more dangerous, the senators believe more should be done by MLB and its teams, so that fans can see the data behind it.

In May, a 2-year-old girl was hit by a foul ball and suffered a skull fracture in Houston off the bat of Cubs outfielder Albert Almora.
