Downtown roads close ahead of Independence Day celebrations

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Crews began preparing for Independence Day celebrations this week by closing off streets downtown for the weekend-long Fair Saint Louis event.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said road construction will be at a minimum this holiday weekend, however, drivers should still be aware of street closures across the metro area.

Fair Saint Louis announced the planned closure of Walnut Street from both I-44 and the Poplar Street Bridge (I-40/64) beginning at 4 a.m. Monday, July 1, for the duration of the event. Walnut Street is scheduled to re-open at 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 9.

The following downtown street closures will take place this week:

Effective at 4 a.m. Monday, July 1 until 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 9

  • Northbound Memorial Drive from Walnut to Poplar
  • Walnut Street exit off I-44 and the Poplar Street bridge (I-40/64)

Effective at 4 a.m. Monday, July 1 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9

  • Walnut Street from Memorial Drive to 4th Street

Effective at 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 2 until 6 a.m. Monday, July 8

  • Market Street from Broadway to Memorial
  • Market Street from Memorial Drive to 4th Street
  • Northbound Memorial Drive from Walnut to Market
  • Fourth Street from Walnut to Chestnut

Effective at 6 a.m. Thursday, July 4 until 10 p.m. Saturday, July 6

  • Washington from First Street to Second Street

The American Automobile Association estimates that a record-high of 41.4 million Americans will travel on by automobile this Independence Day with the most-traveled day being Wednesday, July 3.

According to MoDOT, four people died and 22 were seriously injured in vehicle accidents in Missouri over the last year's holiday. Of those injured or killed, seven incidents involved substance-impaired drivers.
