St. Louis, MO (KMOX) - A popular St.Louis chef has been told he has to take 8 major foods out of his menu.
It's to raise awareness about food allergies.
No dairy, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish or shellfish will go into the meal being prepared by Chef Brian Hale at the BHive above Brennan's this Friday. Those are the top 8 allergens that impact the majority of people with food allergies.
"Imagine walking through life knowing that ingesting just a little bit of a food could kill you?" explains Marjorie Moore, Executive Director of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's St. Louis Chapter.
Moore says Hale has people in his life with food allergies, so already understands, but she adds there were still a lot of considerations. "A lot of the food that Brian's cooking with are whole foods. So we know that what's in a carrot is carrot, so that's a good thing. But when we're looking at things like catsup we really had to talk a lot about we have to make sure that we really read the label to make sure, number one, there's not a top 8 allergen actually in the food, but that it also wasn't processed on a line with one of those foods in the factories."
Part of the proceeds of Friday's dinner at the BHive at Brennan's in the Central West End will benefit the organization. Click here for information on tickets.
