CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) — The state of Missouri starts taking applications for medical marijuana licenses August 3rd, but St. Louis County has yet to decide how far they should be from schools, daycare centers and churches. Councilman Tim Fitch Chairs a committee that wants to impose the state-recommended distance of a thousand feet, while the County Planning Commission wants it shorter.

Fitch asked KMOX's Kevin Killeen. "Zero feet? 300 feet? 500 feet? We just think it should be consistent." Fitch says the battle is worth fighting because today's medical marijuana facility could likely become tomorrow's recreational pot store, with unsavory characters hanging around and the smell of pot in the breeze. Fitch says if the council fails to reach an agreement by August 3rd, the one thousand foot rule will kick in automatically.
