CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) — The federal government is investigating St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger and his office. A federal grand jury issued a subpeona late last week asking for all county contracts PLUS Stenger's call history, texts and emails with current and former county employees regarding said contracts. It also demands recordings and minutes from council meetings and hearings dating to 2015.
It's unclear if the federal investigation will also look into activities of the Port Authority and Economic Development Partnership -- the county's ethics committee is looking into those too.
Meanwhile, Stenger won't be the unelected, inaugural 'Metro Mayor' of St. Louis under Better Together's plan.
The organization told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch it will re-file its petition today to take out the clause which would've given the County Executive, Prosecutor and Assessor positions in a new Metro government without election.
Better Together Executive Director Nancy Rice told the Post-Dispatch this is tied to community feedback, and not Stenger's legal troubles.
