ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — One of the organizers of the group Cure Violence was in town, claiming the program could lower shootings and murders in St. Louis by 30% in one year.
Marcus McAllister says the program works because it employs former criminals who know the town to counsel young people away from violence.
"We have the best stats in the world," McAllister said. "We've been evaluated by multiple universities. It's not something we're guessing could work, it's not us saying that we've got independent criminologists that have said Cure Violence works, it's sufficient."
McAllister met this week with the mayor, public safety director, health director and police chief. No decision has been made yet, but the city's three member budget board of Estimate and Apportionment recently set aside $500,000 for crime prevention.
