ST. LOUIS (KMOX/AP) — A St. Louis police officer was in surgery, listed as critical, but stable condition after being shot at Delmar and Josephine Baker. The alleged shooter is dead.
The shooting happened just before noon Thursday. Names of the officer and the 26-year-old suspect have not been released.
Chief John Hayden tells reporters the U.S. Marshall's office requested help from St. Louis police.
"The suspect had a federal violence violation, as well as a parole violation with the charge being homicide. They wanted to converge on that suspect in the area of Josephine Baker and Delmar. When they converged on the car, the suspect had a female occupant in the car, she stayed. The suspect ran a short distance. After running a short distance, the suspect turned around, fired a shot and struck our officer," Hayden said.
Hayden is not sure if the wounded officer shot the suspect, or if that shot came from the other officer on the scene at the time.
The injured officer has been with the deparment 14 years and is 37-years-old. The other officer is 43 and has been on the force for 17 years.
Weapons that were recovered from the scene during today’s shooting included a .40 caliber Taurus semi-auto pistol loaded with one live cartridge in the chamber and three in the magazine. Also recovered was a .223 Bushmaster AR-style pistol loaded with one live cartridge in the chamber and a drum magazine with 60 live cartridges located inside the suspect’s bag at that scene.
According to police, the investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by detectives assigned to the Force Investigation Unit.
