Emmy Award winning actor Peter Dinklage is taking aim at Disney over its plans to release a live-action remake of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."
The company announced over the summer that it was working on a new adaptation of the animated classic, which debuted in 1937, with Colombian-American actress Rachel Zegler staring as Snow White.
Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, said it's hypocritical that Disney would remake the movie with a Latina lead, while spinning a "backward" story about little people.
"Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White — but you're still telling the story of Snow White and the seven dwarfs," the Game of Thrones actor said on an episode of the "WTF With Marc Maron" podcast.
"Take a step back and look at what you're doing there. It makes no sense to me," Dinklage, 52, continued. "You're progressive in one way, but then you're still making that f--king backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together? What the f--k are you doing, man?"
Dinklage, who has used his celebrity profile to combat the typical Hollywood stereotype that little people can only be cast as dwarfs or elves, added: "Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I'm not loud enough."
His words reverberated online enough that Disney released a statement responding to the criticism.
"To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community," a spokesperson told the Hollywood Reporter. "We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period."
Disney did not elaborate on what the different approach with the seven dwarves would entail.
It's not clear how Disney's response was received by Dinklage. He hasn't mentioned the topic publicly since the podcast.
