ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — At 101 years old, Berlena McElroy French said she only had two regrets: never visiting Paris, and never graduating high school.
Saint Louis Public Schools took a moment to celebrate French on Wednesday by granting her an honorary diploma from Vashon High School.
French left school in 1936 to care for her younger siblings, SLPS said in a Facebook post. Vashon High School opened in 1927 and was the second high school for black students in St. Louis.
"With help from Alternative Hospice and Beauvais Manor On The Park, Principal Smith of Vashon High School bestowed upon Ms. French an honorary diploma!" the post said.
