PHOTOS: Majority of small town in St. Charles County evacuated after water pours over levee

ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - The Mississippi River is now pouring over the levees designed to protect the stretch of St. Charles County between Portage Des Sioux and West Alton. Rivers Pointe Fire Chief Rick Pender tells KMOX it appears the only people left in the threatened area, are in flood-ready homes that sit above the level of the flood of 1993.
He says everyone else that he knows of has already exited the area. The photos above were taken in Portage Des Sioux near Common Field and Lawrence Streets around 11:30 a.m., Thursday.
Thursday was the end of 36-hour warning given to residents to evacuate. Pender says the river is expected to rise a full foot today.
Pender says the first reports of that overtopping started coming in late this morning. He says residents should follow the Rivers Pointe Fire Protection District on Facebook for the latest emergency updates.
