Granite City native, Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene has died

(KMOX) - Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene, who grew up in the Metro East, has died according to NFL.com.

Greene was one of the toughest ever to play in the NFL, but he has a soft spot in his heart for Granite City, Ill. where he grew up and played high school football. The field at Granite City High School had dedicated its field in his name.

Greene was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the fifth round in 1985. He played linebacker for the majority of his 15-season career with the Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, and San Francisco 49ers.

He made five pro bowls and was a member of the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, played in six conference championship games and one Super Bowl.

When he retired after the 1990 season, he had amassed 160 total sacks which, at the time, ranked him third all-time.

Greene was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.

He also coached in the NFL from 2009 to 2013 with the Green Bay Packers, winning a Super Bowl in 2011. He also coached the New York Jets from 2017-18.
