Dick Vermeil is one step closer to Canton.

The former NFL head coach was named a senior finalists, along with former Raiders receiver Cliff Branch, for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

Vermeil, 84, has a career record of 120-109, including a 6-5 postseason record and Super Bowl victory.

He began his NFL career in 1976 after two successful seasons at UCLA, beginning with the Philadelphia Eagles, whom he led to a Super Bowl appearance in 1980 but ultimately fell short to the Raiders.

After a 15-year hiatus, Vermeil returned to coach the St. Louis Rams in 1997 and oversaw The Greatest Show on Turf two years later, en route to a Super Bowl victory over the Tennessee Titans.

He also coached the Kansas City Chiefs from 2001-05, leading them to a playoff appearance before retiring in 2006.

“I am overwhelmed,” Vermeil said, via the Hall of Fame. “I’m not sure I belong there.”

Last fall, Vermeil was asked about the Hall of Fame on the “Upon Further Review” podcast.

“It would be a culmination of contributions for so many wonderful people,” he said. “I don’t have an ‘I deserve’ attitude. I never have. I’ve always believed you get what you deserve. If you don’t deserve it, you don’t get it. If I end up getting in…great. The credit goes to all the people…I’m the end product of their performances.”
