ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Saint Louis Billikens have been flying in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

After starting of the season rather slow at 7-6 in non conference play, the Billikens, under new head coach Josh Schertz, have been flying in conference play, going 6-2 so far, good for a second place-tie with VCU in A10 standings.

A big reason for SLU hot start has been star transfer Robbie Avila, who has averaged 18 points per game, 7.6 rebounds per game, and shooting 54.8% on the court, including 36.4% beyond the arc.

Avila joined Chris Rongey and Amy Marxkors on 'The Chris and Amy Show' Friday, ahead of a crucial game at home against Dayton and discussed the Billikens season for far and his transition to St. Louis.

"The first semester I think it took for me to get used to my area and get used to a new place," said Avila on KMOX. "But I think the guys we have on our team that have been here and the familiarity with Coach Schertz, it was kind of a easy transition for me."

Avila says even as the Billikens get deeper into conference play and closer to the A10 tournament, the team is still trying to create relationships and bonds with one another.

"We think that in order to win, to be a really good team, you have to be close with your teammates," said Avila. "You got to like one and really care for one another. That's really the strength behind the team."

"We've built these relationships and I think we got a really strong bond on the team right now."
