ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Wednesday marked the first day of the International Signing Period in baseball and for the Cardinals, they were busy.
The Cardinals announced 12 signings Wednesday, with two of the signings the Cardinals made on the first day of the signing period being found in MLB.com Top 50 International Prospects.
Among the signings include Nicaraguan outfielder Kenly Hunter, who ranked 38th and Dominican outfielder Royelny Strop, who ranked 28th on MLB.com Top 50 International Prospects.
The signing of Strop is the headline of the class as Strop is the son of former MLB reliever Pedro Strop, who played 13 years in the majors, including eight with the Chicago Cubs. Pedro Strop won the 2016 World Series with the Cubs.
Alongside playing for the Cubs, Pedro Strop also played for the Cincinnati Reds, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. In Strop's career, he posted a 3.20 ERA across 561 career appearances, striking out 554 batters and collecting 32 career saves.
Among the 12 signings, five were infielders, four, including Strop and Hunter were outfielders, two pitchers, and one catcher were among the signees.
The Cardinals say in a press release all 12 players will be assigned to the Dominican Summer League.
