ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It may be the most famous movie quote in the history of baseball films. And it helped bring a little humor to the somber and controversial firing of Mike Shildt as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Last Thursday, the Cardinals announced a parting of ways with Shildt, after three seasons of making the playoffs. It was summarized as "philosophical differences" that had recently come up.
Today, Shildt made his first public statement since the firing. He took the professional high road, thanking the Cardinals front office for giving him the opportunity to manage after more than a decade of rising through the minor league ranks. He also thanked his players, fellow coaches and the media members. At one point, before thanking his wife and stepdaughters, he was on the verge of tears.
But he cleared his throat, looked up and dropped the famous Tom Hanks quote from "A League of Their Own":
"There's no crying in baseball."
