ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals playoff chances might be slim to none now, but the Cardinals are going to make the sure they will end this season playing as competitive as possible.
Following a dismal 12-16 August, the Cardinals playoff hopes has essentially have cratered, with Baseball Reference giving the Cardinals a 0.9% chance to make playoffs, while FanGraphs give the Cardinals a 1% chance.
Despite the Cardinals playoffs hopes looking rather bleak, Cardinals Manager Oli Marmol believes the team will still go out on to the baseball fields and play as competitive as possible the rest of the way, as highlighted by the Cardinals 7-4 win Tuesday night over the Milwaukee Brewers in extras.
"We've committed to playing hard to the end," said Marmol on Total Information A.M. Wednesday. "Regardless of what happens, we are going to lose some and win some, but we are going to take out best shot. These guys are playing with some fire into them and will not give in. (Tuesday night) was a very good win. There were some toughness to it."
Marmol give high praise to outfielder Michael Siani, who was just recently taken off the Injured List, had a big game Tuesday, getting a clutch hit for the Cardinals against the Milwaukee Brewers in extra innings to drive in the eventual game-winning runs.
"I love that guy, it's just incredible how he plays," said Marmol. "That ball flips out of his glove, then he comes up clutch at the plate."
"There's a nonstop competitive edge to way the guy is playing right now and it's fun to watch right now."
While the Cardinals would need a miracle to make the playoffs with 23 games left to go in the 2024 season, Marmol does like how the team has played overall over the last few weeks.
"You look at the series against LA (Dodgers), then Milwaukee, you split with San Diego, who are playing really well, go to New York (Yankees) who are a really tough team and take two out of three, and now we have a chance to do the same here (against the Brewers)," said Marmol. "I like the style of play and we are going to continue it."
