ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals officially released their City Connect uniforms Monday, looking exactly similar to ones that were leaked across the Internet over the weekend.
The Cardinals will wear the uniforms 12 times this season, with most of the games being weekend games, beginning Saturday, May 25 against the rival Chicago Cubs.
The uniforms unsurprisingly features a red jersey. The Cardinals had previously worn a red jersey during the regular season, but it was a one-off as part of MLB's "Shirt Off Their Backs" promotion in the 1999 season.
In the past, the Cardinals have had a red jersey as part of the uniform set, but it was only used during Spring Training games and in batting practice. That red jersey was scrapped before the 2024 season to make room for the City Connect jersey.
The iconic birds-on-the-bat logo stays on the City Connect uniforms, but instead of the Cardinals or St. Louis wordmarks that have appeared on past jerseys, it says "The Lou," the popular nickname of the city of St. Louis popularized by music icon and St. Louis-native Nelly.
The jersey also features wavy red pinstripes, which unsurprisingly, is a nod to the Mississippi River.
A patch with the iconic Gateway Arch along with a Fleur-De-Lis is featured on the left-handed side of the uniforms.
The caps are unsurprisingly solid red, but with 'STL' in a block-lettering white font. The font traces back to 1921, the last year before the club began to use the iconic birds-on-the-bat logo.
The use of the block STL lettering bears a semblance to the one worn by the Cardinals in the 1940 season.
The year 1882, the year in which the Cardinals were established, is also featured, but inside the collar of the jersey.
The release of the Cardinals City Connect uniforms marks the sixth City Connect that been released this season and 26th overall. The Cleveland Guardians, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, and Detroit Tigers all released their City Connect Uniforms this season prior to the Cardinals.
Jerseys and caps officially went on sale Monday, with both being able to be purchased at the Cardinals team store at Ballpark Village and online.
The Cardinals and Nike will also hold a launch party to introduce the new uniforms to Cardinals Nation on Monday night and Friday night outside Busch Stadium.
