Cardinals Adam Wainwright named finalist for MLB 'Man of the Year' award

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The 2020 season wasn't Adam Wainwright's most prolific in his career in terms of strikeouts, wins, championships or other on-field aspects. But his "outstanding on-and off-field performances" has earned him a distinguished honor.

The St. Louis Cardinals veteran pitcher is one of three finalists for the MLB Players Marvin Miller Man of the Year award. It's given annually to one player, as voted on by his fellow MLB players.

The Marvin Miller Award winner receives a $10,000 grant to be used for a charity of his choice.

Wainwright is up against Twins designated hitter Nelson Cruz and Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward.

In balloting for the Marvin Miller Award, players are asked to vote for the player they "most respect based on his leadership on the field and in the community."

Players Choice Awards voting among all players was conducted in mid-September and winners will be announced Oct. 22.

The 39-year-old is a free agent this offseason and has not yet decided if he will return to pitch another season – with the Cardinals or possibly someone else.

Wainwright was the Cardinals most reliable starting pitcher in 2020, as he led the team in wins (5), games started (10), innings pitched (65.2) and strikeouts (54).

He's previously stated his desire to be a Cardinals players for life and could be making his future decision in partnership with with his catcher Yadier Molina, who is also a free agent.
