ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Two matches into the 2025 MLS season, St. Louis CITY SC has not conceded a goal yet. And they have not yet scored a goal either.
CITY SC traveled to San Diego, California to take on MLS' newest expansion club San Diego FC in the club's home opener at Snapdragon Stadium.
CITY SC had a frustrating time on offense, with CITY SC's attack only managing an two shots, both on target, the entire game and were out possessed, with CITY SC only having possession for 28% of the game.
In the advanced numbers, CITY SC had a expected goals (xG) of 0.1, which is as bad as it sounds. For context, in CITY SC's home opener against the Colorado Rapids, CITY SC had a xG of two compared to the Rapids' 0.2.
"Offensively, we didn't create a lot," said CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel on 'Total Information A.M.' Monday. "We didn't look as dangerous as we wanted to be. We definitely looked more harmless than in our opener against Colorado."
Pfannenstiel says on a more positive note, he liked how CITY SC defended so far and was happy with collecting a single point in a tough road environment.
"You are not just playing against San Diego, you are playing against the whole soccer landscape in the US because everyone supports the expansion team in their first home game," said Pfannenstiel. "Picking up a point on the road, I think we'll just take it, politely say thank you and move on."
Pfannenstiel believes San Diego FC is a really good team based on their first two games and the money the club has used to bring in new players, most notably former Napoli winger Hirving " Chucky "Lozano.
"They showed in their first game already against the current champions LA Galaxy in what they are capable of," said Pfannenstiel. "They did spend a decent amount of money on top players when it comes to their attacking department."
"I think defensively, we knew that we can hurt them, but we didn't. Picking up a point on the road and focusing on a good defensive structure was the right game plan, but then again, you want to score some goals."
