Travel options are finally opening up after being restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and at least one airline plans to pass on continuing pandemic related costs to customers.

According to Denver-based Frontier Airlines, its “Covid Recovery Charge” is intended to offset “added costs to Frontier due to implementing [COVID-19] related measures, such as increased sanitation and cleaning onboard the aircraft and in the airport, shields at the ticket counters and gate areas, and personal protective equipment for employees.”

USA Today reported Tuesday that the fee costs $1.59. Frontier – a budget airline that offers flights to and from destinations in the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico – is known for bargain tickets that include tons of extra fees, said the outlet.

A little more than a year ago, Frontier began checking temperatures of all passengers and crew on their flights as part of COVID-19 prevention protocols. In an email, Frontier spokesman Zach Kramer said the airline has discontinued temperature checks per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

Airline ticket prices are up 7 percent compared to last month and 24 percent compared to last year, according to a June 11 CNBC report. Data released in May from the U.S. Travel Association shows that nine in 10 Americans surveyed planned to travel in following six-months.

As of June 18, the European Union  announced that the travel restrictions on the U.S. should be gradually lifted. However, the U.S.
announced continued ground travel restrictions for Mexico and Canada June 20 and other countries have put in place new restrictions in response to the COVID-19 Delta variant, according to Reuters.
