ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Davie, Florida, Police Department says that a death investigation is underway after a house assistant found the body of former Illinois Fighting Illini and longtime NFL cornerback Vontae Davis.
According to police, officers responded to Davis' residence at 6051 Southwest 178th avenue after a housing assistant found the body of Davis.
Police say that foul play does not appear to be involved after a preliminary investigation and that investigation is active.
Davis played 10 seasons in the NFL, playing with the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills. During his NFL career, he achieved 22 interceptions, three forced fumbles, and 97 pass deflections during his NFL career and making two Pro Bowls.
Before his NFL career, Davis was a standout cornerback in Champaign, Illinois, with the Illinois Fighting Illini, where he achieved multiple Big 10 honors, including being named to Freshman All-America first teams. During his time with the Fighting Illini, the team would go to the Rose Bowl in 2007, falling to USC 49-17. Davis would have 13 tackles against the Trojan's that game.
Davis would forgo his senior year to declare for the NFL Draft, where he was drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins released a tribute to Davis after his death was confirmed by police, sending condolences to his family.
