ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A 36-year-old woman is dead after a fatal Wednesday morning accident on eastbound Interstate 44 near Vandeventer Avenue.

According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the accident took place around 6:07 a.m. Wednesday morning. The incident involved a Toyota Prius and a semi-truck.

The department says preliminary investigations reveals the woman was traveling eastbound on I-44 near Vandeventer Avenue when a semi-truck plowed into the back of her, pushing her off of the interstate and into Vandeventer.

When officers arrived to the scene, they found the woman in critical condition. The woman was transported to the hospital, but shortly died after arriving.

SLMPD Director of Public Affairs and Information Mitch McCoy says there was so impact between the semi-truck and the Prius that it pushed the Prius into a snow bank and then off the interstate.

According to statements made from the semi-truck driver, he was looking down to grab a drink and then when he looked back up, the Prius was there.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police says at the moment, it is still unclear whether the Prius was traveling on I-44 or had stopped due to a vehicle issue.

McCoy says they did draw blood from the semi-truck driver as "it is customary to any investigation."

Anyone with information about Wednesday's morning fatal is asked to call the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team.
