Both officers are in critical, but stable condition. There were six pedestrians that were also struck. Two of the men are in critical, unstable condition.

The six people were involved in an earlier accident on the highway, which the officers were responding to when they were all struck around 6:30 p.m.

The person who St. Louis Police Chief John Hayden said was barreling through the accident zone is 21-years-old and was not injured.

Police still have not said if he is facing any charges, only that he's cooperating.

KMOX's previous reporting:
Two St. Louis Police officers were injured around 6:30 PM Monday while working an injury accident on westbound I-64/40 near South Boyle Avenue. A car was speeding through the area and struck the officers.

That driver remained on scene and was cooperating with police, although it's unclear if the driver was arrested or cited.

The two officers, one with 6 years on the job and the other a probationary officer, were taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital where they underwent X-rays and tests.

Chief John Hayden told KMOX News he spoke with them and they were in a lot of pain, but he was hopeful their injuries were not serious.

Hayden also said others were hit by the vehicle, but gave no report if they were also injured. The police were talking with those hurt in the initial crash when the speeding car came through.
