The Forest Park balloon race takes place this weekend, and the tradition is celebrating a special anniversary this year: Its 50th birthday.
Festivities begin Friday night in the park with the balloon glow starting at 5 p.m. The races — including the hare and hound races — will take place Saturday.
Spokesperson Jessica Stegen said they have a lot planned for the half-century celebration.
"We have a lot of our traditional elements, and of course we have 50 hot air balloons joining us with pilots from all across the country," Stegen said. "We have a bonus balloon this year which is actually an 80-foot, 807-pound birthday cake hot air balloon."
While people often ask where the balloons will be flying, Stegen said it's all about the wind direction on the day of the race.
Attendees can also grab food from food trucks, partake in giveaways, see local dance troupes, and more. Find more details about the event on their website.
