ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A group of heavy equipment operators are suing St. Louis City for discrimination.
Nine workers in the St. Louis Refuse Division say they are paid less than white employees doing the same jobs. The workers also say they have been denied overtime pay, saying that they have regularly worked over 40 hours a week and have not received any extra compensation, which is illegal.
The lawsuit adds to the growing issues the department has been facing from concerns to equipment breaking, criticism for picking up recycling with regular trash, and grappling with staffing shortages.
A spokesperson for St. Louis Mayor Tishuara Jones provided a statement to KMOX on the lawsuit.
"While we cannot comment on pending litigation, the City continues its push for competitive wages to retain and grow its workforce," the statement read.
