A first for Missouri: Proposed property tax relief for seniors

St. Louis County could become the first in the state to give seniors a property tax break, under a state law signed last week.

St. Louis County Councilman Mark Harder is proposing the County Council approve a property tax freeze for seniors. This follows last week's signing of a statewide law to let each county decide if they want to freeze tax rates on primary residences for seniors.

"We will be the first county in Missouri to pass this legislation," Harder tells KMOX.

Harder says it doesn't cut taxes, but holds them in place for seniors.

"They get very anxious over not knowing what their tax bill is going to be from year to year and it keeps going up, it never goes down. And then the awkwardness of trying to fight it through the assessor's office is a lot for our seniors to do," Harder says.

He's asking residents to show up Tuesday afternoon for a Committee of the Whole meeting at 1:30 in the County Administration Building in Clayton to push for the bill. The council could give it final approval Tuesday night.
