Missouri has a sex offender registry.

Representative Lane Roberts of Joplin wants to expand the registry to include convicted murderers.

"This bill came to me initially from a family member of someone who had been the victim of a homicide. That victim was killed by someone who was on parole and the victim had actually hired them not knowing what their background was."

Roberts says the list would start fresh with the passage of the legislation, so it would not include cases from the past.
Roberts wants anyone on parole for second degree murder on the list.

"I'm not proposing a new registry. This would simply be an expansion of the existing sex offender registry with a new category. The registry would be renamed Violent Crime and Sex Offender."

Roberts addresses feedback he's gotten that the thought the list would create a stigma for those on it.

"And you know there might be a level of truth in that I suppose but I'm not terribly sympathetic to it. If you're going to allow your child as an example, to go to someone else's house or associate with other people would it be important to you if someone in that household has committed a murder?"
