ST. LOUIS (KMOX)--As Israel declared war to retaliate against Hamas for its surprise attack, St. Louis Congresswoman Cori Bush took to social media calling on the U.S. to end support for Israel's military.

"As part of achieving a just and lasting peace, we must do our part to stop this violence and trauma by ending U.S. government support for Israeli military occupation and apartheid," Bush said on X.

“The timing is just so tone deaf and heartless and it's really beyond reason,” said Jordan Kadosh with the Anti-Defamation League Heartland office in St. Louis.

“Congresswoman Bush took the opportunity to draw false equivalents and once again falsely claim Israel as an apartheid state," said Kadosh.  "The idea that the U.S. should cut off funding for a military ally right as it is in a state of War is just unthinkable.”

The attack by Hamas is hitting close to home. According to Kadosh, the ADL is "already receiving reports of anti-Semitic vandalisms on public property...probably in Congresswoman Bush's district and we're anticipating it to increase."

Just last week, KMOX reported on the rise of anti-Semitic attacks in Illinois. There was 128% increase in anti-Semitic attacks between 2021 and 2022 in the state according to ADL.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker told CBS' Face The Nation, "The United States stands with Israel and so does the state of Illinois and so do I personally."

“My heart goes out to the people of Israel as they face these horrific, unconscionable and ongoing coordinated Hamas attacks and kidnappings on Simchat Torah," said U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth in a statement sent to KMOX.  "The United States stands with Israel and its right to defend itself. The world must unequivocally condemn all terrorism."
