ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - This week's news that six people have died in the downtown St. Louis jail in the past five months has the chair of the Aldermanic Public Safety Committee launching an investigation.

"Six people dying. That's just a lot of people without an explanation"

Alderman Joe Vaccaro is planning a hearing next week to question the city's public safety director. "We will have a public safety meeting. We will ask Dan Isom to come in. We will ask the head of the jail to come in, to see what's going on. How are the drugs getting in there?"

Some of the inmate deaths are believed to have been drug overdoses. Vaccaro says there's also a separate question of whether the jail is properly diagnosing inmates who may have serious medical conditions. "When people go in, are they getting the correct medical attention? Are their needs being met medically? So there's a lot more to this."
