ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Residents in Alton, Illinois finally now know when Gordon F. Moore Park will reopen.

Gordon F. Moore Park has been closed off since late-June, following the emergence of a massive sinkhole at swallowed up a light pole. The sinkhole was caused by a build-up of mud and sediment in an old cave.

170-feet below the park is a mine operated by New Frontier Materials.

On Wednesday, Alton Mayor David Goins officially announced that the park will re-open on Friday at 7 a.m., but with caveats.

Some parts of the park will still remain closed off, including the football and soccer fields where the sinkhole is located. One of the baseball fields at the park will also remain closed when the park partially re-opens Friday.

Additionally, parts of the park that still require investigative drilling will remain closed until official determine it is safe enough for that area to resume normal activities.

Goins says there will be fencing and security to try and deter people from going near the sinkhole and other parts of the park that has not yet been deemed safe.
