The strength of the electric grid in the region may not be top of mind — but a recent report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NAERC) pointed out a few troubled spots. The need for a more reliable grid has been a frequent topic of discussion since a cold snap in February of 2021 that knocked out power in Texas, and forced rolling blackouts in parts of the Midwest. So should customers of Ameren be concerned this winter?

Andrew Meyer, Senior Director of Energy management and training for Ameren, tells KMOX that people can sleep easy this winter knowing that their utility company has been preparing.

"Customers can have confidence that Ameren Missouri will provide reliable electric service this winter," he said.

The NAERC report which showed some flaws, Meyer explained, was based on a worst-case scenario.

"And in this scenario, the system is still meeting the electric demand, but we've eaten into that reserve margin across the midcontinent ISO, or MISO, which is the 15-state power pool to which Ameren is a member," he said.
