On Thursday, former President Donald Trump was indicted following a hush money scandal and faces at least 34 counts. It's a historic occurrence, as Trump is the first ever current or former U.S. president to face an indictment.
But according to CBS's Margaret Brennan, there's still a lot that's uncertain or unknown about the situation. We don't know Trump's exact charges, the extent of his hush money payments, and more.
"So this is really the beginning of a new stage in this long story about the legal troubles dogging the former president of the United States; it is unprecedented to see the indictment of a former president," Brennan said on Total Information AM. "We know he also faces cases in the state of Georgia, as well as federal cases with the Justice Department probing both his role on January 6 and his mishandling of classified information."
While the indictment looks like bad news, some have predicted that it could be a bolster for Trump's 2024 presidential run, both in notoriety and fundraising. Brennan pointed out that just because he's been indicted doesn't mean he has to stop running.
"In terms of the messaging on this, it is fairly stunning to see how unified Republicans are — even those who are trying to challenge the former President for that nomination in 2024 — who are attacking the district attorney, instead of defending the former President," Brennan said. "But doing so as part of this broader narrative of persecution of political motivation that the former president is being targeted and is a victim. And so that is how Republicans are threading that needle at the moment."
