ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - This Friday, the Animal Protective Association is turning control of the Olivette shelter back to St. Louis County.

Prior to the APA taking over, the shelter had a history of abuse, inhumane and unnecessary euthanizations.

In addition, the shelter had no on staff veterinarian and an extremely low adoption rate.

"Currently, we have just over 100 animals in the building," said Sarah Javier, the Chief Executive Officer at the APA. "We are actively working with community members, as well as rescue partners to get as many pets out of this facility as possible before the end of operations."

While the APA has provided St. Louis County with a manual on how to operate the facility with volunteers, Javier has had no communication with anyone from County Health Department.

"The APA has worked very hard to support a smooth transition," said Javier. "We insured St. Louis County have all the tools and resources they need to operate the shelter in the same way we have."

In an effort to get animals adopted, all adoption fees are waived through Friday.

If you're not ready to adopt, you can foster and the APA supplies everything while you are fostering.

Javier says people are welcomed to walk in the Olivette location to find your forever best friend.
