BETHALTO, Ill. (KMOX) - Police believe they may have their man in connection to more than 40 thefts reported by area car wash owners.
Bethalto Police say they've arrested Troy Webber, 43, and he's facing gun possession charges and felony theft for a string of robberies at some Illinois car washes. They say they're also working with police in the region to link other cases to him. Police list him as "homeless" in a report summary.
Similar cases have been reported as far away in Missouri as Fulton and Hannibal, according to Fox2. Another recent theft occurred on Monday night in St. Louis County at a car wash on Watson Road.
Bethalto Police say in the early morning hours of April 19, a man driving a Budget rental truck broke into a coin op machine at a Wash N Go, stealing more than $500. They say similar crimes have happened in recent months in the bi-state area.
Granite City Police stopped Webber in the Budget truck April 21 and arrested him. Police found evidence connecting him to the recent Bethalto crime as well as a firearm.
Webber was charged in Madison County Circuit Court with felony charges of theft over $500.00, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm with a removed serial number, and offenses relating to motor vehicles.
Investigators are working to see if any evidence recovered in the truck will solve other similar thefts in the region.
