St. Louis (KMOX) -- A local attorney representing 'QAnon Shaman' is hoping he can be brought to St. Louis to await trial for his role in the January 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol.
Defense attorney Al Watkins says the court is considering his request to let Jacob Chansley stay at a private home here in town.
"It is a very delightful compound with security that's unparalleled," Watkins said.
The attorney says the hosts are a couple who want to help out because of their own family story.
"What's great about these folks is they are not doing this for any political agenda. They're doing it because they are the parents of an adult special needs child," Watkins said.
Chansley has been diagnosed with mental health problems. He is being accused of participating in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, while sporting face paint, no shirt and a furry hat with horns. He was arrested after turning himself in to the FBI. He’s been charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building without lawful authority and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
Watkins also says the solitary confinement his client and the other January 6 protesters have endured is "excessive" and highly unusual. He also compared it to "gulag" conditions.
Prosecutors say Chansley went into the Capitol carrying a U.S. flag attached to a wooden pole topped with a spear and ignored an officer's commands to leave. He entered the Senate chamber with a group of about 25 rioters, posed for pictures at the dais where then-Vice President Mike Pence had been minutes before and left a note that read, "It's only a matter of time. Justice is coming."
