Berkeley man charged in accidental shooting death of 7-year-old grandson

ST. LOUIS- Berkeley Police have charged a man in the accidental shooting death of a 7-year-old child that took place Monday.

Walter Macon has been charged with a count of armed criminal action along with a count of first degree endangering the welfare of a child.

On Monday, police responded to an incident at the 5500 block of Tuttle Street on to reports of an accidental shooting.

According to the probable cause statement, Macon was loading studio recording equipment into his Ford F-150. While he was loading he allowed his grandson, listed as DM, into the backup of his truck.

Macon only left his grandson in the truck alone for around five and a half minutes.

At some point, DM, discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson .40 caliber gun between the front driver seat and center console that was was improperly secured.

Macon returned to his truck where he discovered DM slumped over the front passenger seat with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police believe that the wound was self-inflicted, and Macon told police the gun was his and he was aware the gun was in the truck at the time he left he left his grandson alone.
