Missouri lawmakers are arguing that more people with guns could make schools safer.

A bill passed the Missouri House on Wednesday that would expand who can carry weapons and school security officers. It would allow teachers and staff with weapons training to be armed on campus.

Representative Chris Dinkins authored the bill, and says it would allow districts to set their own policies in conjunction with the community.

"They would have the opportunity to discuss that with their local school board meetings as required by the bill when they have the community meetings," she said.

Representative Ian Mackey of St. Louis County has his doubts that more guns would make schools safer from active shooters.

"What's gonna stop an AR-15 — a teacher with a handgun? No, it's not," he said, before voting in support of the legislation.

The bill is now headed to the Senate after passing 120-25, with opponents concerned about teachers with guns and when they might have to use them.
