The St. Louis Board of Alderman Friday moved forward with a pair of bills that could mark the city's first regulations on short-term rentals booked through sites like Airbnb and VRBO.
One bill, sponsored by Alderman Bret Narayan, requires operators to apply for permits every year. Units that violate codes three times within two years could be shut down. The regulations would also require two-night minimum stays and a maximum ownership of four short-term rentals per person.
"I'm looking forward to having regulations in place so that when we have problematic short-term rentals, the city can take action on them and shut them down," said Narayan.
Another piece of legislation creates a conditional use hearing for potential short-term rentals located in single-family home neighborhoods.
The bills still need another approval before they could head to the mayor's desk for her signature.
Last weekend, a teenager was killed at a party in South City. It was being held at a rental. A similar incident happened last year at a downtown condominium.
