St. Louis (KMOX) - The mask mandate in the city of St. Louis could also face a challenge. But it would not be for the mask issue itself. It would be related to spending.

Aldermanic President Lewis Reed says in her mask mandate health order, Mayor Tishaura Jones went beyond her City Charter authority to suggest she could spend millions of dollars in federal COVID relief money without the approval of the Board of Aldermen.

"The Mayor is essentially going in and getting access to these funds that have never been appropriated by the legislative branch," Reed said.

Jones' health order directs the City health department to spend money "as necessary" to curtail COVID-19 and address the "economic and societal effects" of the virus.

Many on the Board of Aldermen are saying that's too open-ended.
