Candy corn, gummy bear brats are remarkable sell-out hit for Illinois smokehouse

MILLSTADT, Ill. (KMOX) - Although waxy, squishy and sugary candy doesn't sound like a great addition to bratwursts, the sales records of a Metro East butcher would say otherwise.

For the last six years, Schubert’s Smokehouse and Meat Packing Co. has been selling out on its bratwursts that are infused with gummy bears or candy corn. The 43-year-old business says this time of year has the biggest demand.

“The gummy bear actually melts throughout the bratwurst,” owner David Kossina told Fox 2. “We probably make six to 700 pounds a year.”

The gummy bear brats began as a special item for just one customer from Chicago. Then about five years ago they were added to the menu. Walking by Halloween candy one day inspired him to try other candy inside his meats – so he tested candy corn.

Kossina says they make about 350 pounds of candy corn brats each fall and they sell out every time.

The company assures, as odd as they may seem, the candy-infused brats are approved by the USDA.

Schubert's has plenty of traditional bratwursts as well and they say their most-popular product are their natural casing 100% beef little smokies.
