ST. LOUIS - St. Louis has notched another win in advanced manufacturing.
Carondelet is set to be the site for a I.C.L plant that will make the ingredients for electric vehicle batteries.
Monday was the groundbreaking for the $430 million project. Some of the top public officials were at the invent including U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
KMOX radio Michael Calhoun went in-depth and talked to Greater St. Louis CEO Jason Hall about the groundbreaking plant and what it means for St. Louis.
"This puts St. Louis right at the center of innovation of building the building blocks of those batteries," Hall said, "This is this huge investment that puts us right at the epicenter of innovation."
The investment by I.C.L to invest $430 million is some of the latest investment major companies have invested in the area. General Motors is set to invest $1.5 billion to Windshill along with MEMC investment of $300 million on silicon wafer capabilities.
Hall says that the area's commitment to the jobs plan help set it forth for companies to come to the area and invest in the region.
"We are winning as a region, we are winning on manufacturing," Hall said, "When you look around the world today, you see how important it is to make things in this country and rebuild our domestic supply lines. St Louis is proud to be a region that is building things for this country."
The project will be complete in phase with Phase I set to be completed by 2024 and the factory is expected to be fully active by 2025.
