Church offers public explanation of cutbacks

The Archdiocese plan to close half of parishes, according to recent reports, has been criticized and opposed. Now, Fr. Chris Martin, Vicar of Strategic Planning, is out with more of a public explanation.

After asking meeting attendees to keep details of its "All Things New" parish closure plan to themselves, the St. Louis Archdiocese is speaking publicly in the face of parishioner pushback.

Fr. Chris Martin, Vicar of Strategic Planning, in a pre-recorded video, explains why as many as half of area parishes could close, "It seems like it was almost easier to be Catholic or to be Christian in the past ten, twenty, thirty years and we just opened the doors and people would show up and that's not the case anymore."

He says while the church needs to find new ways to reach the non-religious, it also needs to right-size for a society with fewer Christians.
