A new Pew survey finds churchgoers hear about a wide range of political and social issues from the pulpit. Most Americans say at least one political or social issue has come up from the pulpit in the past month -- with abortion, Israel and homosexuality topping the list.
Pew Senior Researcher Becka Alper says immigration was also big. "When they hear about their clergy speak about immigration, and 27% say they've heard their clergy talk about immigration in the past few months at their place of worship, they tend to hear more about the need to welcome and support immigrants at 15% than the need for stricter immigration enforcement. 3% said that."
Despite that, Alper says many Americans are not sure whether the leaders of their congregations are Republicans or Democrats.
Alper says about 1 in 10 regular attenders say they have recently heard their clergy speak in opposition to the U.S. military action in Iran, while 4% say their religious leaders have spoken in support of it.
The Pew Research Center is out with a new report exploring which hot button topics American churchgoers say they hear about from the clergy.
