ST. LOUIS - KMOX There was an exchange of gunfire outside the Downtown Social Security office on Friday between a woman and St. Louis Police. The woman involved has been released from custody.

An eye witness captured video, as the woman fired from inside her van at police, and officers returned fire. No one was injured, and the woman was eventually arrested.

She calls herself a sovereign citizen and according to police, she wanted to shoot up the social security office. However, in an interview with KMOX, the woman, Jada Davis, says she never threatened to shoot up toe social security office -- she says she was there to do business in the morning on a pending case.

Davis also told KMOX that she never fired shots directly at officers, but that she fired what she considered a "warning shot" when police appeared to be breaking into her van.

"I'm not a danger, I did not shoot in their direction. That's why they cannot charge me and did not charge me with armed criminal action nor assaulting an officer," Davis said.

Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's spokesperson Allison Hawk tells KMOX that the circuit attorney doesn't make the call on releasing detainees -- police have 24 hours to present evidence and after that time, the detainee must be released.

What is not clear at this point is if police applied for charges. The Crime Intervention Team responded to the call Friday. Davis was evaluated by the psychiatric personnel at the City Justice Center.

Hawk tells KMOX News the case is still open and that the Circuit Attorney's office is waiting for more information on the investigation by St. Louis Police. The police department's Force Investigative Unit is investigating the case.
