SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - A civilian oversight panel gets the green light from a court to investigate a string of inmate deaths at the Downtown St. Louis Jail.
The legislation to create the civilian oversight panel for the jail was sponsored by Alderman Joe Vaccaro. He says he hopes they find out the truth, "I think even the court is probably wondering, what about the six deaths and what is all going on over there. It's just putting a set of eyes over there."
Vaccaro says the deaths at the jail are not only a tragedy, but a liability for the city in possible wrongful death lawsuits. The seven-member civilian panel has the power to subpoena documents and testimony in their investigation.
