St. Louis, MO (KMOX) - What's the job outlook for new college grads this spring? "Most graduates would say they feel a sense of uncertainty," says Norma Guerra Gaier, WashU’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Career Development and Education.
Speaking on KMOX's Total Information AM, Gaier says new grads need to be flexible. "It'll be important for our new grads to be agile, to be open to possibilities that maybe aren't exactly, defining their ultimate career goal, but perhaps opportunities that are adjacent to their career goals," explains Gaier, "so those kinds of experiences that will help them to stay on path and to get a little closer to that eventual goal that they are seeking."
In order to set themselves apart she recommends new job seekers pay close attention to the skills and competencies that employers are looking for. "Making sure that their experiences and their narrative, how they tell their story, specifically aligns to the language and to those competencies that employers are seeking. We always tell students, look at your in-class and out-of-class experiences that you collectively have, and what story does that tell about you? What are you able to to bring to an organization?"
Another key for new grads is networking. In today's world, that means using tools like LinkedIn. "We actually teach students on how they can effectively utilize LinkedIn to their benefit," says Gaier. She explains you should start with your close circle, then see who their contact are and who might belong to organizations that match your career goals.
