ST. LOUIS - Could FLEX Learning be the way of the future? Mehlville High School sure believes so.
FLEX learning is a new school curriculum that combines coursework done in multiple subjects into one overall lesson.
This is the second year that FLEX learning has been apart of the curriculum at the school.
"Students do a lot of writing," says Dan Lamping, a teacher at Mehlville, "Rather than learn two courses independently of one another, (the school) merges them as much as they can."
Lamping gave an example of the learning with students writing a paper about Jim Crow laws instead of writing a paper and learning about Jim Crow.
Reagan Kirkpatrick is a sophomore at Mehlville High School who is entering her second year in the high school FLEX program, and she says she does enjoy the program.
Kirkpatrick explains that combining the coursework created more interest in certain subjects.
"Originally I did not enjoy with engineering," said Kirkpatrick, "But after it got tied to other subjects, it got more interesting."
Kirkpatrick is a veteran when comes to experiencing the learning, first taking FLEX classes back in middle school. She says what piqued her interest about the learning is how different it was from traditional learning.
